  1. 1. This story is interesting because it follows the journey of a very old woman. The purpose of the journey is unknown until the very end, though. It starts out a little slow because it is just an old woman walking through the woods, talking to herself and the animals. As the story progresses, she gets deeper and deeper into the woods. The part that I found to be a bit strange was when she first encounters a real person, the hunter, she is a little rude to him and then steals the nickel from him. I think she was lonely, but did not have very good people skills. I found it intriguing that the author left the destination a secret until the very end. This allowed me to look back at the beginning of the story at all of the struggles that she overcame, and know that she did it for her sick grandson. I also really liked the way she was so excited to get another nickel at the end because then she could buy a toy for her grandson.

    2. There is one big overall message in this story. This message is perseverance. Perseverance is the main theme because the old woman in the story traveled through a long journey with many obstacles in order to accomplish her goal of getting the medicine for her grandson. Phoenix Jackson, a very old woman, had to walk by herself through creepy woods. Meanwhile, she got caught in a bush, pushed down by a dog, and frightened by a scarecrow. Even through all of these difficult obstacles, she managed to get to town to get the medicine that she needed. Phoenix Jackson had perseverance throughout the entire story.

    3. In the beginning of this story, there is a description of Phoenix’s appearance. The author states that she wears a red rag on her head. I think the red on her head symbolizes her energy, passion, desire, strength, and power that she has on her journey. Throughout this journey, Phoenix has to have all of these qualities in order to reach her final destination. She has to have strength and power to get through the woods and get the medicine. Also, there are many references to her old age. Even the people she talks to immediately call her “granny” and “grandma”. These references are symbolizing her wisdom and knowledge. Elderly people are seen as very wise. Phoenix was very wise on her journey because she knew she had to start early in order to get where she needed to be. She also knew the ways to go and how to get her dress untangled from the bush without ripping it. Lastly, she was very clever when she distracted the hunter to get the nickel that he dropped. Phoenix had to have this wisdom in order to survive on this journey.

    1. I found this story interesting because the author used so many descriptive words to describe the journey of Phoenix. At times, I could picture myself there with her on the journey. I also found it interesting that the story took place during the Christmas season.

    2. The overall message is perseverance and unselfish love. I found the journey of Phoenix to be much like that of Jesus. She was belittled by the old man and told to go home much as Jesus was ridiculed and told to go home. She did not quit out of love for her Grandson even though this was a trip she made often and knew exactly what to expect. Jesus never gave up out of his love for us and continued on knowing he would be crucified.

    3. The little paper windmill that Phoenix wants to buy for her grandson symbolizes the fragile nature of herself. Her grandson is the only thing left in the world that keeps her going just as the wind is what keeps a windmill going. When describing her grandson Phoenix says he, peeps out of his little patch quilt holding his mouth open like a little baby bird. I believe this is symbolic for the fragile nature of the boy. He must be attended to and is not ready to enter the world but must be kept in a cocoon while the mother bird provides for his every need.

  3. 1. What I enjoyed about the story ”A Worn Path” by Eudora Welty was that Phoenix had so many obstacles to overcome (barbed wire, a stream, a scarecrow she thought was a ghost). Phoenix was tenacious in her goal to get to town and she didn’t let any of difficulties she faced slow her down. Near the end of the story, we learn that it’s the medicine needed to treat her grandson’s injury that makes her so determined to get to town.
    2. I think that the overall message of the story is one of hope. The story takes place around Christmas, which for Christians signifies hope. Like Phoenix facing her fears and overcoming the obstacles in her way, if people stay on their path, even though they may face hurdles during their journey through life, they can accomplish what they’ve set out to do.
    3. The color red is mentioned many times in this piece. I see it as a sign of Phoenix’s inner strength and love for her grandson. The name that Eudora Welty gave her main character – Phoenix – fits perfect too, as the phoenix is a mythical bird that is reborn through fire and can often be used to signify hope and rebirth.

  4. 1. This story "A Worn Path" by Eudora Welty is interesting because i think it described the level of poverty among the Negro. The way Phoenix was described, how she got to the doctor's office with all the suffering, and her excitment about the windmill she want to buy for her grandson really shows that she is living in poverty.
    2. I think the overall message of this story is perseverance. Phoenix wants her grandson to be heal despite all obstacles and circumstances around her. Physically she is not fit for the journey because of her age and emotionally she is traumatized because of sick grandson.
    3. She tied her head with color red which I think it means her desire and her love for her grandson to be healed. Also, black dog was mentioned in the story which symbolise evil, fear and mystery. These symbolic meaning made the journey more difficult.

  5. 1) what is interesting to me about this story is how old phoenix seems to be lost in so many different parts throughout her journey. To me it seems that she has somewhat lost her mind and is seeing things as she travels. The scarecrow that she thought was a ghost was not even there. She claimed to feel a coldness inside the sleeve so I think she was just seeing things. It was also very interesting to me how the story ended and how it was very abrupt.
    2) I believe the overall message of this story in to keep the will to complete something that you set your mind to. Even when she came across the different creatures that she did she slammed her cane down and told them to leave her be. She also struck the dog that ran up to her. She didnt let any of these creatures stop her from going where she was going. She also didnt take the man's advice when he told her that she should stop and go back home.
    3) Her red rag tied around her head symbolized her energy, passion, and desire. During the story she never stopped and was very passionate about where she was going. She also had the energy even in her old age to take this long journey and cross water in the cold. The black dog represented evil, mystery, fear, and death which tied in to her grandson who she was retrieving medicine for. She couldnt let the black dog stop her or he could die from his throat closing up.

    1. This story is interesting because it is a real life scenario. It is a tale of an undying love and devotion of a grandmother to his grandson. The story is well written that with just reading the story, as if you can feel the grandmother’s pain while she’s walking through the woods and the terrifying events she encountered while on her way to town. It must be very hard for Phoenix who is an elderly with poor eyesight to be walking in the woods but with her determination to bring home the medicine for her grandson, she goes on with her journey. The grandmother’s journey is surely a worn path; a journey full of obstacles and trials.

    2. The overall message of the story is that a person would do anything and everything for someone he loves no matter what. In this story, the grandmother loves her grandson so much that she would climb mountains, cross rivers and walk for miles just to get the medicine for her grandson.

    3. Two literature symbols and meaning:

Hill – A hill is just like a mountain which is symbolic for obstacles.
River- The river is symbolic for journey.

  7. 1)What is interesing about the story "The Worn path" is how you can relate it to real life current events that people now a day still go through. People go through the impossible to try and help their loved ones. The main character Phoenix went through a difficult journey in which her life was at risk but the love for her grandchild kept her going. Even walking to town on a December Winter day. What strucked me the most is how cruel the hunter treated her by pointing a gun her her face. You should always have respect for your elders. What amazed me was how in her fragile condition she still managed to put her grandson first. She was not greedy and with the ten cents she got she thought in getting a paper wind mill for her grandson.
2)In my opinion, the overall message is to never give up, no matter the circumstances. Phoenix had to steadyly cross a log to get her over to the other side. After almost loosing hope she starts imagining her grandson as if he was there and that pushed her more. She came across a vicious dog that ended up bringing her to meet a hunter who showed her no respect. Granny pretty much showed people, if she can do anybody can. her love for her grandson was deeply strong and knew if she didn't care for him, no one will. She kept her head up high and continued on her journey for a good cause, for her grandsons medicane. She has also taught in never giving up hope.
    3) Granny mentions the color red which could symbolizethe love she has for her grandson. Also it could mean the strength she portrays in showing no matter her size or age. Third, her desire to get to town to get her grandsons medicane. The river she crosses can symbolize the journey she goes through to achieve her goal. No matter what gets in her way throughout her journey, she is willing to encounter it without hesitating.

  8. 1. This story “A Worn Path” by Eudora Welty is unusual because it just talks about the woman, Phoenix Jackson walking to town and it leaves you hanging. The story describes Phoenix as a very old fragile woman. She has a hard time walking threw the woods to town and normal things in the woods are obstacles to her. Once she gets to town, she does not even remember why she made the long journey. The story does not talk about the son or explain what is going on with him. The story just ends with her leaving the doctor’s office.

    2. The message of this story is to never give up and sometimes you have to push yourself to get things done. Phoenix had many things getting in her way on her walk threw the woods but she did what she needed to get past them. If Phoenix would have given up, her grandson may not have been living. She had to make the trip several times for him. She pushed herself to go to town even though she was so old.

    3. The woods are symbolic for the unknown journey phoenix is about to take. When she starts her walking, she does not know what is going to be in the woods in front of her. She had some obstacles like the thorny bush, a creek with a log, and the barbed-wire fence. The gun is symbolic for the man and his cockiness. He thinks the gun makes him more powerful and intimidating. The man puts the gun in Phoenix’s face to scare her but she tells him “…I seen plenty go off closer by…” and does not move.

  9. 1. The story "A Worn Path" by Welty, Eudora was a story I instantly fell in love with. I loved the character Phoenix Jackson because of her determination and faith in god. The story describes an old African American woman that was traveling a long grueling distance by foot to the doctors to receive median for her ill grandson. She encountered a fallen tree bridge, a scary scare crow, a barbwire fence and even a nice Caucasian woman who helps her lace her shoe. Through the long trip, Phoenix walks to her destination with her umbrella used as a cane. She always kept a positive attitude throughout the entire trip. The forest she was traveling though wasn’t made for an old woman, but she went through it as if it were.

    2. In my opinion, there is more than one core meaning. The story can be about the struggles an African American woman had in the time where racism was at its peak. It could teach us that to get where we are now was not easy. It can also be about how important your faith in god can be. Throughout the entire journey, she never cried “oh god, why me?” She always kept her faith, and never doubted that god would get her to where she needed to go or whether her ill grandson was ok at home waiting for her to return. It could also be about determination. She had strong determination to get her grandson what he needed to get well. She was determined the entire trip and it showed by her actually reaching her destination. Finally, I think it could have been about love. She loves her grandson so much that she went through heat, distance, and the odds of her reaching her destination alive. She was willing to die for her grandson’s health and she wasn’t even frightened of the thought.

    3. Phoenix mentions the color red which symbolizes the strong love she has for her grandson. She traveling such a distance in order to retrieve medicine for her grandson is nothing but love. The color red also stands for evil. Although, phoenix was far from evil, she did steel once from a white man. But she does everything for her grandson and whether if it’s wrong or good she is more than willing to sacrifice. Red also stands for power, confidence, and strength. Which she was all three to get threw that type of long trip. She was one amazing women and grandmother.

  10. What I found interesting and striking about the worn path was the old woman’s ability to make the trip to town from so far away. She is very old, small, and her eyesight is poor yet she ventures out into the woods like a soldier on a mission. She manages to walk with her “umbrella cane” over a path that is unpredictable. There are fallen trees, thorny bushes, and uneven ground to trip and injure her. Her eyesight is so bad that she relies on her feet to remember where to take her. However, she is not deterred from her task by anything or anyone; not by her age, not the danger of falling, not even the possibility of being eaten by an animal will stop her. She is brave and determined in her love for her grandson.
The overall message of the story is the unconditional, selfless love and devotion she has for her grandson. Examples of that love appear throughout the story. The physical journey she makes to the town to get the medicine is the largest example of her love for him. She also talks about him tenderly to the nurse when she is in the doctor’s office telling her, “My little grandson…he got a sweet look.” As well, her heart is beaming when she talks of buying her grandson a paper windmill and how happy it will make him.
The two symbols I choose to analyze are:
    1) The old woman’s name, Phoenix, is a symbol of recurrence or resurrection. A Phoenix is a mythological bird that resurrects its life over, and over again, much like. Phoenix’s walk along the worn path recurs. As well, a Phoenix is a fire spirit. Fire can symbolize determination and strong desire. When she meets the hunter, and his gun, and his dog, she does not waiver when he tells her to go home; she stands her ground and tells him, “I bound to go to town, mister.”
    2) On the first page, in the second paragraph, at the end of the sixth sentence the story is describing Phoenix, “And the two knobs of her cheeks were illumined by a yellow burning under the dark”. The dark describes the color of her skin and the “yellow burning” symbolizes optimism and hope, as well as, joy and happiness. She lived a full life and is old and tired, but she makes this journey many times, each time with optimism and hope burning brightly inside her.

  11. 1. 1. The most intriguing part of “A Worn Path” by E. Welty was how the author kept the final destination a mystery. It wasn't until the very end of the story when the audience found out that Phoenix had traveled to the doctor’s office for her grandson. Phoenix, a poor old grandmother is continuously going through obsitcles during the story. It kept me interested going through the variation of obstacles alongside of her.

    2. I believe the overall message of the story was perseverance. Regardless of Phoenix’s prior knowledge of the difficult journey ahead of her, she continued to push forward through every barrier. She trudged forward out of the love and strength she has for her sick grandson.Despite her old withered body she takes one step at a time. Even though at some points she loses direct focus of her mission, she continues feet fast in the direction of her goal.

3.In the beginning of the story Phoenix's' red bandana comes up several times. I think this is without a doubt, a sign of the old grandmother’s strength. The red bandana in reference to strength is mentioned throughout the story while mentioning her physical features and when she comes into certain obstacles. I think the barbed wired fence she has to crawl through is a symbol for some of life’s toughest struggles. Phoenix showed with diligent skill and patience how to tread carefully and cautiously through such a battle.

    1. The short story by E. Welty, “A Worn Path” is interesting and intriguing because it shares a glimpse into the life of Phoenix Jackson. She is a very small, yet determined, older lady who is going to continue her journey to Natchez, Mississippi to get her grandson’s medicine. While reading this story it is very clear that she’s taken this journey multiple times. She’s frail, yet doesn’t allow the hunter or the scarecrow cause her to turn back towards home. Her determination makes her an undying figure of strength. In the beginning of the story it is clear that, even though she sways from foot to foot, she knows the path well. It is my belief that is why the story is titled, “A Worn Path”, she created the path over time. During her journey she talks to the animals as if they would obey her because they’ve seen her so many times. This path shows how she walked uphill and was proud to look back and notice she made it.

    2. The overall message of the story is determination. Phoenix Jackson had obstacles put directly in her path. It was difficult for her to walk, yet she did. The animals she encountered were wild and she talked to them as if they were able to understand. The hunter happened along her journey, with a gun, and she stared this man squarely and solid and told him she was not afraid of his gun. Her journey was uphill and took place during the month of December. One instance that really stood out was she had no fear of speaking to another lady – a white lady. She actually asked to white lady to tie her shoes. The lady did so and to me it brought unity for the human race. The last phase of her journey was a bit of humiliation when the man called her a pity case. When the nurse recognized her she spoke softly and inquired about her grandson. Phoenix’s mind left her for a moment; however, she snapped back and recalled why she was there. She was determined to complete her journey in order to make sure her grandson received the proper medicine he needed.

    3. “RIVER” is a great symbol for this short story because it directly ties in with her journey or voyage. From the very beginning you understand through the careful and intentional words of the writer that she has experienced this particular journey several times. Her voyage is set with an abundance of obstacles that she overcame. The next symbol is “SUN”. She certainly had a reason for her journey, which she made time and time again. And she was successful on her journey. The sun is spoken of as being bright and high in the sky. It directly links to the energy and determination she exuded on this journey. The life she had may not have been of riches but it was complete with love.

1). I found “A Worn Path” interesting for so many reasons. I loved Phoenix’s personality and light-hearted attitude while overcoming obstacles in her path. Even when Phoenix had a gun pointed at her she was unwavering in her quest.
2). I felt the overall message of this story was perseverance through tribulation and that the will of your heart can give you more strength and drive than youth. The love Phoenix had for her grandson was stronger than any ignorant assumption made about her or thorn bush that snagged her up.
3). The first instance that stood out to me symbolically, was the hunter in the woods pointing his gun at Phoenix, I feel this was the hunters way of using his gender to try dominate, or intimidate Phoenix when he realized she was unwavering in her quest. Repeatedly he tried to tell her to go home, and even after trying to threaten her with his “gun” she plainly told him she would not change her plans on heading to town. Secondly, while Phoenix walked through the woods a thorn bush snagged her dress. She spoke to the bush saying, “… thought you was a pretty little green bush.” I think Phoenix might have meant “I thought I’d have good luck on this trip.”

  14. 1. The story A Worn Path is interesting because it just shows how deep a mother’s love can be. You see this little old lady walking for miles so that she can get the things that she needs for her son. She will not turn back no matter how many obstacles she faces. Even when the obstacle is her own memory she is determined to do what she set out to do.
    2. The overall message of this story is to do what you set out to do. No matter how hard it may be, people are stronger then they give themselves credit for. People, especially black people, have been on the warn path of life since they came to this country. It should take more than a few obstacles to stir them from their goals. The history behind the women’s movement has not been paved in gold. That is why it is so powerful to see this woman just keep going on her path.
    3. The beginning of the story starts by talking about this Negro woman in a red rag on her head. Well Negro means black in Spanish and black is a symbol of power. Red is also a color for strength, so just in those two lines the story tells us how strong this woman is. The next thing that I noticed was that her name was Phoenix. The Phoenix is a mythical bird that travels across the earth so the sun can make him young again. The road for the phoenix is hard and the bird has to stop to rest because he is old. The phoenix keeps going in the myth until he completes its mission and the sun makes him young. The story talked about how her eyes were blue and this color symbolizes calm and tranquility. There are so many symbols in this story that make you want to read more.

  15. This story, The Worn Path, was interesting because it described the journey of an old woman and her undying love for her grandson. Of course, you don't learn about her grandson until the end of the stroy but you can see how she perserveres throughout the entire story. The overall message of the story is clear. If you work hard for what you are trying to accomplish, you will reach your goals. It also teaches that love can conquer all things. Because of her undying love she was able to overcome many obstacles that got in her way. The very first paragraph says that Phoenix is wearing a red bandana on her head. I think this symbolizes her energy and passion to get where she needs to be. Towards the middle of the story, Phoenix is threatened by a black dog which I think represents the fear of her not being able to finish her journey. Of course, she is saved by the hunter and able to continue. This was a great story and was enjoyable to read.

  16. 1) This story is interesting because it is an example of how love and determination can get a person through any situation.
    2) The overall message of the story is perseverance and determination. The story's main character, Phoenix, makes a long and dangerous journey to get medicine for her ill grandson. She speaks of a two-headed snake she came in contact with on one of her journies in the summertime. On this journey, she is attacked by a dog, has a gun pointed at her by a hunter, got her dress caught on a thorny bush, and had to cross a creek on a log. But, she has been making the journey for two or three years. All of these things show the character's strength and determination.
    3) The red rag that Phoenix wore on her head is a symbol of her strength. It's a symbol of the strength she showed to continually make the journey to get the medicine for her grandson. Another example of symbolism is the character's name. A phoenix is a sacred, mythical bird with beautiful gold and red colors. The bird was said to regenerate when hurt or wounded by a foe. It was known to be immortal and invincible.

  17. 1. This story is interesting because it describes what means to truly love, and how that love determines a person, in this case Phoenix to take this long journey to help her grandson.
    2. The overall message of this story is to show that no human limits, like the age of Phoenix should limit us in doing what is best for our loved ones. It teaches us what true love means, and the fact that it comes with great sacrifice. It is all about the other person. Selfishness does not have a place in true love. True love is selfless and it is proven by Phoenix through her long journey and her perseverance to get to the end.
    3. In this story it is mentioned a river. I believe the river in this story represents the journey that Phoenix is taking to bring home medicine for her grandson. What I found to be interesting is that even the title describes Phoenix's perseverance in doing what is best for her grandson. The word "worn" in the title it clearly states that although this is definitely a hard journey to be accomplished by an old lady, it seems that it was done so many times to become worn.
In the first paragraph of the story it is mentioned that Phoenix is wearing a red bandana. I believe that the reason the author chose the color red is because red symbolizes her love for her grandson and her desire to see him healthy.

  18. 1) The story "A Worn Path" by Eudora Welty is interesting because having been written in 1941, 70 years later it still is a story to read when learning about how things were during that time period. To see how much of a vivid mental picture writers achieved even that many years ago is pretty unbelievable. It can easily be adapted into a short movie, in fact I believe somebody has done that and put it on YouTube.

    2) I believe the overall message of the story "A Worn Path" to be a story of mostly love with a side of personal passion. The fact that Phoenix Jackson would probably walk to the ends of the earth to take care of family and loved ones shows both love and passion. During her walks she would often be caught up or stopped in her tracks from everything ranging from nature to man. It seems that nothing would stop the tough old "grandma." She has the personal passion to push through everything from a ghost scarecrow to shotgun waved in her face. Having that passion to strive to reach her goal shows a lot about what kind of person she is, and not to mention that passion comes from the love she has for her grandson.

    3) Two symbols that could be picked out from the story are the colors red and green. Red is the color of Phenoix's rag that covered her head as her hair draped from it. Red can mean love and passion. The author's color choice showed in Phenoix's attitude about her mission and her personal values. She would not give up by any means, she was passionate. She was doing this for one special person in her life, out of love. Green can be a sign for nature and luck. One direct line sums up the symbolism. When she was making her journey to town Phenoix was hung on some thorns of bush. Phenoix said "I in the thorny bush,' she said. 'Thorns, you doing your appointed work. Never want to let folks pass—no, sir. Old eyes thought you was a pretty little green bush." Everything that led up that point she was not having the best of days. A walk seems easy enough, not when "old eyes" see one thing, or in the case of this story having a streak of bad luck.

  19. 1.I found "The Worn Path" interesting, because the story took place during CHristmas time.Christmas Time is my favorite time of the year. It represents Jesus's birthday.
2.The overall message of this story is determination. Phenoix would do anything for her family. She is braving the journey in the wood for her loved one. It show the character that Pheniox has about her, and it is a good quality to have.
3.The quote "Her eyes are blue with age", I believe shows that she is older with age, but also she is lonely. I believe she lives alone at her house and rarely has visitors, even though she would do anything for her family.

  20. “A Worn Path” by Eudora Welty is a striking story because it shows the love that a grandmother have for her grandson in a real life situation. Like many grandparents, Phoenix is willing to risk her life for her grandson’s recovery. Phoenix is willing to endure the pain and humiliation of criticism. Many children do not see the difficulties that parents face to obtain the things that they need. The overall message of the story “A Worn Path” is to encourage one to be optimistic despite the obstacles one may face along his journey of life. There are many examples of how a small obstacle can discourage one from reaching his goals. Phoenix’s journey to town begins with the biggest obstacle of all, her eyesight. Despite the decline in her vision, she believes that the love she has for her grandson will guide her feet to the doctor’s office. Phoenix encounters both physical and nonphysical obstacles along her path. Some physical encounters include the dog that knock her over, the scarecrow that frighten her, and the thorns that hinder her. An example of a nonphysical encounter is the hallucination cause by lack of food. Ms. Welty uses many symbols in her story. The story takes place in December on a bright frozen day. December is the season for death, but the bright sun gives her encouragement and a reason to make her long journey. The main character’s name is also a symbol. A phoenix is a bird that burns up and returns to life. Phoenix’s character is that of a phoenix. She has determination and stoicism.

  21. 1. "A Worn Path” by Eudora Welty is a really amazing heartfelt story. Phoenix Jackson breavely went through the wild woods that contain danger wildlife. Espeically Phoenix has a poor eyesight but she has a faith that she could do it by getting to the tow to pick up a medinece. she gave up the concepts what could have happened to her in woods. she knew her grandson is the most important thing to her. him getting better is the only thing that matters most.
2.Now, thee overall message of this story was perseverance. The love grandmother Phoenix for her grandson in the story has shown how much she really loved him. the love is made naturally. she has a power belief she would get the medinece. it amazes ne that she had many things happen to her that really scared her heart out. but the result was she had a faith, she could do anything in safriface to help her grandson's ill.
3.one of symbols that really showed in a story is obviously red. Phoenix wore the red rag on her head is a symbol of her strength, strong red heart and bloody love that is made from family love. nothing can breaks what she has for her grandson. she has low sights but it doesnt mean anything. to her if it was for grandson. she really braved for her hope with the grandson.other symbol would be black. Phoenix was threatened by a black dog which symolizes her to fear, stuck, evil, dirtty, the end of her life.

  22. 1) "A Worn Path” by Eudora Welty is an interesting story because it's about an old woman named Phoenix Jackson and her journey through the woods on a winter day. She faces many obsticules along the way just to see and give her grandson medicine. On her adventure through the woods she comes across many things such as a barbwire fence, a scarecrow that she thought was a ghost, and a hunter with a gun, which she then reveive ten cents from so she could buy her grandson a windmill. She was a an old woman who loves her grandson and would do anything for him and thats what kept here motivated throughout her journey. What was kept a secret until the end though, was that the woman was one her way to the doctor's office to pick up the medicine for her grandson.

    2) The overall message of this story is perseverance because no matter what the woman came across in the woods she kept going and made it to the doctor's office to get her grandson's medicine. This shows how confident, loving, and strong this old woman really is. It shows that nothing was going to get in her way or stop her from accomplishing something in her life, exspecially when it involved her family.

3)In the beginning of the story, the old woman is wearing a red rag on her head. The color red symbolizes her energy, passion, strength, and love she has to get the medicine she needs to her grandson. Second is the river Phoenix crossed. The river symbolizes a journey or an obsticule that she must overcome. In the end she does by getting the medicine from the doctor's office.

    By Eudora Welty

    1. This story is interesting because it makes you wonder if her grandson is really even alive. The main character never mentions anything about her grandson until she was at the doctors office. Maybe she goes to get the medication for herself. The woman does come across as barely being able to take care of herselft because she seems a little crazy.
    2. The overall message is that she is an older woman that has little education that still lives her life as simple as possible. She does not have an education and does not have much money.
    3. The log over the river symbolizes the life that she has faced. It has not been an easy life for her but she has made it this far. The story says that she has blue eyes that symbolize the peace that she has made with her life.

  24. 1. One thing I find very interesting about the story is how Phoenix so blatantly steals the nickel from the hunter that she encounters along her journey. She offers no apology to the hunter despite the fact that he has a gun, which he points at her. We don't know until the end that the nickel is to be used to buy a gift for her grandson showing that Phoenix would do anything for the boy, and redeeming herself.

    2. The overall message of the story is that Phoenix will stop at nothing to get her grandson the medicine he needs and she will also do whatever she can to bring him a little joy. The hill, the creek with the log crossing it, the thorny bush, the barbed wire fence; not even the cold of December was going to stop Phoenix from reaching her destination.

    3. The dictionary defines the word "phoenix" as "A person or thing of unsurpassed excellence or beauty; a paragon". I think this describes the protagonist perfectly; well, maybe not the beauty part. Phoenix sets an example for everyone that has obstacles to overcome , for example, parents providing for their children. Phoenix's hands are always yellow, however the author probably chose to reveal this fact at the same time Phoenix was stealing the nickel from the hunter to emphasize her dishonesty.

  25. A Worn Path by Eudora Welty

    1. This story is interesting because it gives you just enough information to make you wonder what is going to happen next. For example, the story starts by introducing Phoenix as "very old and small" walking slowly through dark woods and immediately the reader wonders why this woman is subjecting herself to this physical and potentially dangerous journey (1). Another example occurs later when Phoenix encounters the hunter and he tells her to, "stay home and nothing will happen" to her (5). This dialogue causes suspense in the reader, wondering what terrible occurence will befall Phoenix.

    2. The overall message of this story is the need to overcome obstacles in order to fulfill duties and responsibilities. Phoenix is "bound" to undergo this troublesome journey to fulfill her responsibility to care for her injured grandson despite many challenges. For instance her old age, diminishing eyesight, and failing memory make the pilgrimage through the woods especially challenging for Phoenix.

    3. The blue eyes of Phoenix Jackson symbolize her sense of loyalty to her grandson while the red rag tieing her head symbolizes her strength of character despite her failing physical strength.

  26. 1. This story is interesting because of the unwavering character of the woman. The reader follows along as the woman talks to the animals and herself. One is left to wonder if she has lost her faculties. Phoenix encounters many obstacles both physical and imaginary, but persists on her trek. This woman appears fearless in the face of the hunter while trespassing on private property. Even at gun point, Phoenix stands firm. However, the old woman fears a ghost until she realizes it is merely a scarecrow watching over the field of corn. Her ability to traverse a somewhat harsh environment with limited movement and vision is remarkable. It is not revealed until the end that the purpose of her long journey is in fact for someone else.
    2. The overall message of the story is determination. Phoenix Jackson pursues a long and exhausting journey for the sake of her grandson. She must navigate the pinewoods and trespass on a large private property in order to reach the city. Nothing holds her back from getting the medicine for her grandson, although she fears that she might not be able to make the trip much longer. The old woman’s failing sight and frail body are no match for her resolve. Her path has been taken so many times that Phoenix can perform the task nearly in her sleep. This proves useful when the Christmas decorations offer no distraction as she finds the medicine for her boy.
    3. The two headed snake in the story symbolizes a man. The fact that it was a two headed snake indicates that he spoke one thing but meant another. She said it took a while to get by him. He could be speaking kind things to her but she could see his intent to harm her, she would have to charm her way past him. The color red is symbolic for love, devotion, sacrifice and danger. Phoenix loves her grandson. Through her deep devotion to her grandson she embarks on a long and dangerous trip to the city. When she is offered money and has ten cents accumulated, she cannot wait to spend it on a toy for him.

    The Black Cat

1.) This story is interesting because of the way the story ends. When the man kills his wife and tries to kill his cat as well. Towrds the end of the story he puts his dead wife behind a wall and tries to get rid of the evidence. While he is doing this his cat that he tried too kill by hanging jumps into the wall with his dead wife. Once the police arrived to his home they didn't even notice the smell of the dead body immediately. I personal thought that was unusual and interesting.

2.) The overall message of the story is the man killing his wife and cat. The reason why the man does this is because of his bad childhood and they way he was always treated wrong which evenually drove him into madness. He started to drink a lot and talk to animals etc. When he started doing that he had almost completely lost touch with reality itself. Which then leading to his ultimate downfall.

3.) The black color on the cat is symbolic for mnay things like mystery, fear, evil, unhappiness, depth, style, anger, and much more. These descriptions help describe the black cat that the man in the strory abused. Another is the mans wife. She symbolizes kindness, curious, anger, love, good, sadness, and innocent. All those descriptions describe the wife and somewhat leads to her death.

    A Worn Path

    1. The story "A Worn Path" by Welty, Eudora is a story i enjoyed reading. The character Phoenix Jackson was so strong and hopeful because of her determination and faith in god. The story describes an old woman that was traveling a long distance by foot to the doctors to receive medicine for her beloved grandson. She encountered so many obstacles that would hold the average person back, but she kept on pushing. At the end of the long trip, Phoenix finally arrives to her destination with her cane. She stayed positive and willful through the entire journey. She was able to make it through the forest with impaired vision and hearing, which is incredible. At the end of the story, it is revealed the journey served another purpose.

    2. The overall message of the story is Willpower. Phoenix Jackson follows a long and strenuous journey for the sake of her grandson. She navigates through the woods and takes routes that lead her onto private property just to get to the city. Nothing holds her back from getting the medicine for her grandson, although she fears that her old frail body will no longer make the trip, she pushes on for the sake of her boy.

    3. In the story, there were many phrases that can be translated into a meaningful symbol. The color red which was worn by the old lady is symbolic for love, passion, and energy. The quote "Her eyes are blue with age", meant she had alot of wisdom and insight. It could also mean she is yearning for companionship. I believe she lives alone at her house and rarely
has love ones there. But she cares and would do anything for her family.

    What is interesting?

What is poignant in this story A Worn Path by Eudora Welty is the determination, strength, and resilience that Phoenix Jackson, the elder african american woman has besides her tribulations and struggles. She faces adversity with animals, the humans, and her condition and personal issues. On her way to the clinic, she's on the same path she always crosses meeting the animals and struggling through the woods. She advances with willpower and determination. She meets the hunter with a gun but is not afraid, in these woods that could symbolize danger, she is not afraid. She also confronts the nurse who calls her grandma though she knows not of Phoenix. It is condescending but Phoenix pays them no mind and accepts a nickel. She is strong, and determined and it shows. She gets the medicine for her grandson and goes back through the same old path.

    2. What is the overall message of the story and why?
The overall message of the story is to not give up. Never back down because of adversity would be a great advice. It is wise to be sure, determined, strong willed, and resilient. There may be obstacles but as long as you can still move on, move to your objectives and let everything out the way, animals, trees, hunters, racist people and get what you need and go through the same path again. Life is an arduous journey but one must do what he or she is set to do.
    3. Gold and Red. Phoenix had gold cheeks and a red bandana. She symbolized power, perfection, and strength. Although old, Phoenix was powerful, she was strong, and perfect for her age. She was a warrior going through the woods and crossing over the river and keeping her cool with the hunter. Red, she exuded passion and vibrant energy. Like fire, she was alive and passionate about nature and talked to herself. She was full of strength, energy, and livelihood.

    A Worn Path

1.The story A Worn Path is so interesting and striking because she is so determined to get the medicine for her grandson but she forgot the purpose for going to begin with. Yet she still didn't let that stop her in her journey.
2.The message of this story is to stay focused and determined on something no matter what obstacles come in your way. Like the woman forgot why she was going, ran into a numerous people telling her to turn around but she still kept going and got the money and medicine to do those things for her grandson.
3.The red rag tied around her head has many symbolic meanings. Some of the things red symbolizes are passion, strength , aggression. ALl of these words represent phoenix. She has the energy to keep going and persevering what her mission was passion is also another words used to describe her drive. It is also symbolic that she kept the red scarf on the whole journey. There is also a lot of yellow symbolism in " The Worn Path". It represents the money given to her by the hunter and the woman in the doctors office. Yellow also represents happiness and you can see the woman's happiness when she gets the money to buy the windmill for her grandson.

The story "A Worn Path" by Eudora Welty is an interesting story. It talks about an elderly african-american woman named Phoenix Jackson. Phoenix takes care of her sick grandson. A few years ago her grandson swallowed lye and sometimes his throat would swell up which gave him breathing complications.

For the love of her grandson, she travels through the woods to town to get his medicine. She has taken this trip many times, but no matter what she seems to face, she keeps going. She even began to have hallucinations, but she blames it on her age. Once a dog tried to attack her and she was saved by a hunter, but the hunter then turned on her and even pointed his gun at her. After she showed him that she was not afraid on him, he let her go.
When she got to town, she got his medication. She then began to face another problem when she received her change. Because she was an elderly african-american woman, instead of giving her a nickel back, they gave her four pennies.

This story is all about love and respect. She would do anything for her grandson to live, but she would not just sit aside and let someone belittle her. She stood up for herself without overly putting herself in harms way. She wanted to buy her grandson a paper windmill. To me the windmill represents her love for him. Most people think it is what you have that makes you, it is better yet how you use what you have. You do not have to have the best of everything to live and be happy.

    1. The story "The Worn Path" by Eudora Welty, is interesting and striking to me because it tells a story about a dedicated and old aged African-American woman who is so persistent in walking long distances for the aid of her grandson. Phoenix Jackson had so much love for her grandson and his well-being that she would walk aching and treachorous distances just to get medicine for her young grandchild who swallowed poisonous lye a few years earlier. Phoenix encountered several obstacles during her journey but would not let anything get in her way or stop her from getting to her destination. This story is a great example of how one human can have so much love for another human without wanting anything in return but love.

    2. The overall message of this story is Love and Dedication. Phoenix never gave up getting to her destination even though so many obstacles tried to stop her in her path. It took the love for her grandson to walk many miles just to get the medicine that her grandson needed in order for him to be able to breath. Phoenix never second-guessed her decision to take the long journey because she knew that her grandson needed her and that she had to be strong in order to get to where she needed to go to get what she needed to get. Even though Phoenix was old in age and she felt as if her frail body would give up on her, she never gave up and kept walking to get the medicine for her grandson. After all, love is what keeps up going.

    3. The color of Phoenix's "red" scarf symbolizes the love and passion that she had for her grandson. Phoenix walked several miles frequently to go to town to get medicine for her ill grandson. Phoenix was old in age but showed strength and power when she overcame obstacles while on her journey. She was not scared of the hunter who pointed a gun at her or the dog who tried to ambush her while she was walking through the woods. Phoenix's journey also symbolizes a "mountain" because of the obstacles that she encountered while walking through the woods. After several miles, Phoenix finally succeeded and made it to her destination which was the medicine store that was located in town. Phoenix never gave up even though so many things came in her path. Phoenix knew that she had her grandson back at home waiting for her and that he really needed his grandmom to be strong and make it back to him. This story shows the love and dedicatin that one old woman had for her grandson and that she would do anything possible to get what he needed to be healthy.

  33. 1. The author's style was almost unbearable to read. I find it interesting that this is recognized as classical literature. I do not find an old lady walking through the forest interesting in the least. Where are the battles with trolls from the mountains?

    2. I guess the message is that anyone can persevere through any trial for a loved one. It reminds me f a movie I saw once where a grandmother stole money from the mafia in order to pay for her grandson's operation. except stealing from the mafia is way more dangerous. and a lot more awesome.

    3. Phoenix name is symbolic of the bird. The phoenix is an eternal bird that always overcomes death. That is not to say that the character in the story is eternal, though she kind of is through literature. The bush in the story represents all the evil of the world trying to hold people back from their goals. It left her clothes tattered, yet she carried on, just as life can leave scars, but scar don't stop us from accomplishing our goals.

  34. The Worn Path was an interesting story that I enjoyed reading. It was interesting because it shows how dedicated a person was back then. It was about a elderly lady name Phoenix Jackson who would travel through anything to make sure her grandson got his medicine.

The message of the story is dedication and love. The reason why is because Phoenix went through many obstacles like the woods, dogs, and swamps to get her grandson medicine.

The red of her scraf symbolizes passion and love. The river symbolizes her journey to get her grandsons medicine. Additionally her blue eyes symbolizes loyalty since it was only her grandson and her

  35. 1. The story "A Worn Path" was a interesting story to me because the story was very descriptive throughout. It described the story in so much detail that I felt like I was in the story with her. Another striking thing to me was how dedicated the women was and how determined she was to help her grandson.
    2. The overall story to me was about determination. Even though the women was very old, she was very determined to get the job done and make it to the town for her grandson. She had all kind of obsticles along the way to stop her and she still made it to the town.
    3. The yellow burning on Phoenix cheeks resembles the many days she was out in the sun or her skin turning from old age. All the hard work she had done in her life. Another interesting symbolization is when she says "seem like ther is chains about my feet..." this resembles that her feet are heavy along the path. She could be tired or feet hurting or she could have been walking for a long time that it seems like her feet were dragging.

    ReplyDelete
  36. 1.The interesting part of the story is when the hunter rescues Phoenix and asks her of where she was going and she replied she was going to the city. The hunter then assumes the only reason Phoenix was going to the city was to see Santa-Claus and and also when she stole the hunters money.
    2. The overall message of the story is perseverance and love.Phoenix demonstrated this by walking this long distance to get medicine for her grandson, her only relative left.even though she encountered problems on the way, and the discouragement from the hunter did not prevent her from carrying on.Also Phoenix showed how much she loves her grandson. This shows how people will go the extreme for the people they love.
3.The name Phoenix can be attributed to an ancient Egyptian bird that rises from its ashes.which means resurrection. In Christianity, God sent his only son Jesus Christ to come and die for our sins
Also the red rag tied on her head symbolizes her strength. Strength was one reason that Phoenix was able to get to her destination.

  37. 1. The story "A Worn Path" is interesting because it is so shocking to see a small, petite and elderly woman like Phoenix to be so tough, have so much strength, and not afraid to say what is on her mind. It's striking to know Phoenix had to go through so many obstacles and she never gave up because she loved her grandson so much she would do anything to make sure he was taken care of. Phoenix eyesight is bad but she still manages to make it though the streams, hills and barbed wire fences. She was very poor because she was excited when she received 10 cents to buy her grandson a windmill.
The unusual part of the story is when the white man put a gun in her face thinking she is going to be afraid but she wasn't. In spit of her rough journey she made it through.

    2. The message overall is saying no matter how old people get they are able to overcome any obstacle in their life. For example, Phoenix is a strong, tough, black woman who loved her grandson so much no matter what she had to go through she was going to take a journey to get him the medicine he needs. She didn't let anything stop her and she wasn't afraid of anything.

    3. Phoenix symbolizes a universe that's been destroyed and gets rebuilt stronger and tougher.
The journey started in a cold winter(emptiness) month December.
Black (evil)(power) dog (4 leg animal)
The number 2 means times spent together. It was Phoenix and her grandson the 2 of them.

    1. The Worn Path is a pretty interesting story about an african-american grandmother, who endures some troubles on her path towards getting medication for her grandson. At one point she even forgets what her main motivation for going on this path was. I believe the author put some real meanings into the words used in this short story. But the main moral of this story is, that she tried so hard and overcame many obstacles that many people wouldn't normally be able to overcome. She symbolizes every strong woman who fights to save her kin.

2.I believe the overall message the author is trying to portray is that anyone can overcome obstacles as long as their motivation surpasses their will. It does not matter of physical strength or mental capacity, what matters most is their will to do something no matter if they believe they will fail or not. The woman in this story endures hardships upon her worn path, but doesn't quit regardless of all the obstacles that stand in her way. She surpasses her fears and overcame them, even though she did not believe she would make it. This is the true point of the story, nothing can stand in the way of a determined individual willing to do anything to save the one they love.

    3. The red bandanna on the grandmother's head symbolized strength and perseverance, and gave her passion to fight for her grandson's health. The black dog defines her fear of not making it in time to save her grandson. The black dog was a time consuming obstacle which prevented her from moving forward. This brought fear upon her and dampened her spirits of the fire which she had earlier on, but once she got past that obstacle, her spirits burned a flame much greater then before. She was even more determined and motivated to move forward. This allowed her to reach the end of her journey.

  39. a worn path is interesting because of the way it was written. to me, it read almost as a dream. There were symbols, like the red rag tied upon Phoenix's head, black dogs, scarecrows, all of which could have a number of meanings(fear, danger, death.)
I think the message of the story is perseverance to reach the end of one's journey. Phoenix is braving all sorts of dangers, real and perceived, by traveling to the city for her grandson, who is the only person left in the world for her and she for him.
i think Phoenix's red scarf may have symbolized strength and love, also passion, as that love for her grandson and her want for his well-being gives her the strength to make her journey despite her age.

  40. The story 'The Worn Path' is very interesting because the old lady Ms. Phoenix seems to care very much for her grandson. She had to travel by foot all the way from her home, through the forest (which seems very dangerous) and then to the town to get the medication for her grandson. Even though she seems very old, she persevered and did not give up until she got the medication. She seems to be a very caring grandmother and very strong for her age. I believe the overall message of the story is perseverance and strenght. Even though Ms.Phoenix seems very old, she did not give up on getting her grandson's medication. She seems poor, and could not afford much. She had to travel a very long distance by foot to get to her destination, and she achieved her goal in the end. Looking at the handout on 'WRITING ABOUT LITERATURE-SYMBOLS AND MEANINGS,'the color red means strenght and love for me. A person can have love for someone else and that love can be very strong. The love can be for your parents, a friend, or even someone you are romantically interested in. Red is such a powerful color to me. It's strength can be displayed in many ways. If someone loves another person, the love can be so strong that he cannot keep away from the one loved. In the story, the grandmother Phoenix loves her grandson so much that she travels a very long distance to get the medication for the child. This love is strong, and it was well respresented by Ms. Phoenix actions. The color green means youth. In the story, the grandson was young, and so he needed care from someone else. He was not able to venture out and get his own medication, so his grandmother took the responsibility to do so. His young body needed medication, and he had to get it inorder to get better.

  41. A Worn Path is interesting because of the awkwardness of the situation. The main character, Phoenix, is an old woman on a journey to get medicine for her sick grandson. The story is told in a strange way making the old woman look crazy, like when it seems she is talking to animals, and when she gets scared by the dog and drifts off into a dream.

The Overall message is to do whatever it takes to get what you need. Phoenix overcomes several obstacles to get her grandson's medicine.

The Black Dog represents fear and the green grass and shrubbery on the trail represent misfortune.

  48. DULCE ET DECORUM EST
I felt the interesting thing about the poem, “ Dulce Decorum EST”, was the way the author told the story of a dying soldier. The poem to me seem to tell the story of injured war soldiers, who were taken off the battle field by fellow soldiers. It described in some detail what it was like on the battle field, from the perspective of the author.
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning. In all my dreams, before my helpless sight.
The author is imagining seeing a fellow soldier dying in front of his or her eyes. It also seem that these two were close, from one feeling that all their hopes and dreams would be lost if the other died.
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood comes gargling from the froth-corrulted lungs.
The author explains, while this fellow soldier was in the back of the truck, if you listen very close you could hear the sounds of death.

    Welcome to Hiroshima
The interesting thing about this poem to me was reference to the time in one section. History has taught us that during that time, those affected had very little time to react. Also the explicit description of all the deaths that accrued during that period.

Just before things really went bad it was safe to breathe the air and remembering how safe it was to drink water from the Ohta River before it was filled with blood and scum and dead bodies.

Stepping off the train and seeing all the reminders of that day in history that everyone that lives in Hiroshima will never forget. The images of the mushroom cloud that’s shown whenever the story of that day is told.

    Immigrants
I thought the poem “Immigrants”, was interesting in the fact that people from other Countries will go to great links to become a US citizen. At the same time keep their original culture intact. The American dream is felt all over the world.

Bill and Daisy, buy them blonde dolls that blink blue eyes. This tells me that Bill and Daisy feels to better their chances of getting in this Country would be to show how much they love white America. History has taught us that the most powerful people in America have always been blonde and blue eyed.

Whispering in Spanish or polish when the babies are sleep. This tells me that although Bill and Daisy wants to come to America, and in doing that they will have to teach their child American culture, such as speaking English. They will also have to ensure that their original culture is not forgot
